Well there should be some mutual basic trust , like knowing their 'phone number and address and feeling ok to 'phone them or knock on their door with friendly intentions - and vice versa - though also knowing , and their knowing us well enough to be able to say 'sorry it's not a good time right now' , without meaning or causing any offence .

for me, they should be someone u can laugh with, cry with and be quiet with. someone u can trust.

Isn't that rather extreme?
If you don't consider someone a friend until you can trust them completely, how do you ever get close enough to them to find out whether you can trust them or not?
I get close enough to many people, but I don't consider them friends. I only have 2.5 people I consider as friends
